The Workshops
The Fall 2025 cohort will participate in eight dynamic workshops, each facilitated by a dedicated team member or subject matter expert. Following each session, cohort members are invited to complete an online survey to share feedback and evaluate their experience. To further support learning and application, the workshops are complemented by ongoing, out-of-classroom assistance provided by the Academy’s instructor team.
Workshop 1: Friday September 12th from 8 AM to 1:00 PM
Welcome to Tradepoint Atlantic + Orientation, Coaching & IT Foundations — Tradepoint Leadership, Anita Hicks, & Tom Koerber
This introductory workshop is designed to give Empowerment Academy participants a strong foundation in all things Tradepoint Atlantic. It includes a refresher on the company’s history, mission, and ongoing development efforts, as well as an overview of real estate development practices unique to Tradepoint’s operations. The day will include a guided property tour led by the Empowerment Academy team.
Participants will connect with one another and engage in interactive discussions with Tradepoint Atlantic’s senior project development team. The session will also set expectations for the Academy and introduce the program’s professional coaching component.
During lunch, participants will join a dynamic, interactive session on small business information technology — covering essential tools, common challenges, and practical strategies for managing tech needs as businesses grow.
Workshop 2: Friday September 19th from 8 AM to 11 AM
The Financing to Grow Your Business – Anthony Williams
Accessing capital remains one of the biggest challenges for M/WBEs and other historically disadvantaged businesses. This workshop will equip participants with practical tools to secure financing with confidence.
Topics include how to prepare business plans, financial documents, and what funders look for. The session will explore a wide range of funding options—traditional loans, grants, bonding programs, and alternative models—with a focus on the construction industry. Real-world case studies will highlight how similar businesses have successfully accessed capital.
Workshop 3: Friday September 26th from 8 AM to 11 AM
Smart Business Growth Strategy & Procurement – Shonte Eldridge
Procurement is key to business growth—especially in construction and development. This interactive session will help participants understand procurement processes with Tradepoint Atlantic, Baltimore County, and the State of Maryland.
The workshop will include hands-on activities, best practices for proposal development, and insights into what decision-makers are looking for. A high-level overview of PRISM (Procurement Request Information System Management) will also be provided.
Workshop 4: Friday October 3rd from 8 AM to 11 AM
Accounting and Taxes – Kimberly Royster
From invoicing to tax compliance, this workshop will help participants take control of their finances. Topics include accounting basics, time tracking, using accounting software, and understanding tax obligations.
Participants will gain tips on preparing financial statements, maximizing deductions, and staying compliant with state and federal tax laws. The session will also include guidance on working effectively with accountants and avoiding common financial pitfalls.
Workshop 5: Friday October 10th from 8 AM to 11 AM
Human Resources Management & Local Workforce Engagement – Kimberly Prescott
HR is at the heart of any successful business. This workshop covers hiring practices, managing teams, and using technology to streamline HR functions.
Participants will engage with workforce development partners and learn how to attract and retain a skilled workforce. The session also includes an overview of prevailing wage standards and other key compliance issues to help businesses remain competitive and compliant.
Workshop 6: Friday October 17th from TBD
Legal Essentials for Small Business – Kisha Brown
Legal issues can derail a business if not addressed early. This session will provide participants with foundational legal knowledge—covering contracts, intellectual property, business structures, and regulatory compliance.
Participants will leave better prepared to handle legal risks, work effectively with legal professionals, and protect their business from unnecessary liability.
Workshop 7: Friday October 24th from 8 AM to 11 AM
Insurance & Benefits Matter – Protect Yourself, Clients and Team – Corey Redmer
Insurance and employee benefits are critical to business continuity and workforce retention. This session will walk participants through the types of insurance coverage small businesses should consider and how to design effective benefits programs.
The workshop will also explore how insurance and benefits contribute to business credibility, legal compliance, and long-term success.
Workshop 8: Friday October 31st from 8 AM to 11 AM
Marketing & Telling Your Story – Vonnya Pettigrew
Strong marketing tells your business’s story and connects it with the right audience. This session focuses on foundational marketing strategies and crafting a compelling brand narrative.
Participants will learn how to articulate their unique value proposition, build customer loyalty, and use storytelling to elevate their brand and drive growth.
Graduation Celebration: Thursday November 20th from 11 AM to 1 PM
The graduation event honors the hard work and dedication of Empowerment Academy participants and serves as a launchpad for their continued success.
In addition to celebrating achievements, participants will have the chance to network with Tradepoint Atlantic leadership, contractors, tenants, and government partners. This event marks both the end of the Academy journey and the beginning of exciting new opportunities for business growth.
Support Services
One of the most valuable takeaways from the Empowerment Academy is not just the opportunities participants gain—but the lasting relationships they build with trainers and fellow business owners in the cohort. These connections are essential for continued growth and success.
To support this ongoing development, the Empowerment Academy will allocate resources to ensure trainers remain available for follow-up support. For up to four weeks after the program concludes, participants can schedule additional one-on-one appointments—either online or in person — with Academy trainers.
