The Workshops
The cohort will participate in a total of eight (8) workshops, each facilitated and moderated by a different team member or subject matter expert. Following each workshop, cohort members will have the opportunity to provide feedback via an online survey regarding their experience. These workshops will be complemented by additional out-of-classroom support offered by the Academy instructor team.
Workshop 1: Friday September 13th from 8 AM to 1:00 PM
Welcome to Tradepoint Atlantic – Tradepoint Leadership & Anita Hicks
This introductory workshop aims to equip Academy participants with a thorough understanding of all aspects related to Tradepoint Atlantic. The goal is to refresh their knowledge and establish a solid foundation in real estate development practices specific to Tradepoint Atlantic and its operations. Participants will have the opportunity to network with each other and engage in interactive presentations and discussions with Tradepoint Atlantic’s senior project development team. This workshop will also establish the foundation and expectations for Academy participants.
Workshop 2: Friday September 20th from 8 AM to 11 AM
The Financing to Grow Your Business – Anthony Williams
As businesses expand, the challenges faced by M/WBEs in securing and retaining financing are widely recognized. This workshop is crafted to offer Academy participants valuable insights and practical strategies for obtaining financing to foster business growth. Key practices in securing financial resources, such as developing a compelling business plan and understanding essential considerations in funding acquisition, will be highlighted. Additionally, the workshop will delve into the diverse funding opportunities available in the construction industry and showcase case studies illustrating successful financing strategies adopted by M/WBEs.
Workshop 3: Friday September 27th from 8 AM to 11 AM
Smart Business Growth Strategy & Procurement – Shonte Eldridge
Understanding the intricacies of the construction industry and the procurement process can significantly enhance a business’s success and growth. Since the procurement process involves multiple critical steps that must be carefully managed, a well-informed business strategy is crucial to maximizing opportunities in this space.
Academy participants will gain knowledge to improve their business strategy and navigate the procurement landscape with Tradepoint Atlantic, Baltimore County, and the State of Maryland, as well as obtain skills to develop competitive proposals that maximize the chances of securing business contracts. A high level overview of PRISM (Procurement Request Information System Management) will also be provided.
Workshop 4: Friday October 4th from 8 AM to 11 AM
Accounting and Taxes – Kimberly Royster
Is your business struggling with timely invoicing, accurate employee time tracking, or seeking to improve its accounting software proficiency? Perhaps you’re curious about potential tax breaks for different businesses? These are crucial questions that require attention! Our workshop is meticulously designed to ensure a comprehensive understanding of accounting principles, concepts, and practices relevant to small businesses. Participants will acquire vital skills and knowledge to interpret financial data and make well-informed decisions for business advancement. Academy participants will participate in an in-depth exploration of best accounting practices and essential questions to discuss with their accountant. Additionally, staying on top of business taxes is crucial for maintaining your business’s health and standing. Business taxes can be complex, so seeking expert help is recommended. Early identification and resolution of tax issues are essential for business sustainability. Understanding the rights of businesses with both federal and state governments is paramount.
Workshop 5: Friday October 11th from 8 AM to 11 AM
Human Resources Management & Local Workforce Engagement – Kimberly Prescott
This workshop will equip Academy participants with a thorough understanding of the fundamental concepts, best practices, and key responsibilities within the realm of Human Resources (HR). In the competitive business landscape, attracting and retaining the right talent can be the difference between success and failure. A skilled team can drive success, while a mismatched one can lead a business astray. During this session, emphasis will be placed on effective people management, strategic hiring practices, and the integration of technology to streamline HR processes. Additionally, participants will have the opportunity to engage with strategic partners specializing in workforce development, ensuring access to a well-trained labor force. Furthermore, insights into prevailing wages will be provided to enhance participants’ understanding of industry standards and compensation practices.
Workshop 6: Friday October 18th from 9:30 AM to 12:30 PM
Legal – Kisha Brown
This workshop will furnish Academy participants with a thorough understanding of the pivotal legal considerations and requirements crucial for operating a small business. Legal disputes can consume valuable time and financial resources, diverting attention from core business activities. During this session, participants will acquire essential knowledge to effectively navigate legal challenges, safeguard their business interests, and ensure compliance with relevant laws and regulations. Additional topics will encompass contracts, trademarks, copyrighting, and other pertinent legal aspects vital for small business owners. This session will provide the necessary tools and insights to navigate the legal landscape confidently, ensuring the protection and longevity of business endeavors.
Workshop 7: Friday October 25th from 8 AM to 11 AM
Insurance & Benefits Matter – Protect Yourself, Clients and Team – Corey Redmer
This workshop within the Academy is dedicated to illuminating the critical importance of insurance and benefits. Safeguarding businesses, their clients, and employees stands as a paramount concern in today’s ever-evolving business environment. We will delve into the essentials of insurance coverage and benefits management, tailored specifically to meet the needs of small businesses. Participants will gain invaluable insights and practical strategies, spanning from comprehending various types of insurance policies to navigating the intricacies of employee benefits. Recognizing the vital role insurance and benefits play in mitigating risks, building trust with clients, and fostering a motivated and loyal workforce, this workshop aims to equip participants with the tools necessary to safeguard their business interests and nurture resilience within their teams.
Workshop 8: Friday November 1st from 8 AM to 11 AM
Marketing & Telling Your Story – Vonnya Pettigrew
Marketing skills encompass the remarkable ability to craft compelling narratives, capture attention, and forge meaningful connections between businesses and their clients. Every business must articulate its unique value proposition and demonstrate why it excels in its field. However, storytelling can be challenging, especially for M/WBEs who often prioritize client performance over developing a comprehensive marketing strategy. This workshop is tailored to equip Academy participants with the fundamental concepts and strategies of marketing while enhancing their ability to craft compelling narratives. Participants will gain invaluable insights into effective marketing techniques aimed at promoting products, attracting customers, and fostering business growth and reaching businesses’ full potential through strategic storytelling and impactful marketing strategies.
Graduation: Thursday January 9th from 11 AM to 1 PM
This graduation event aims to honor the participation of Academy participants and serves as a catalyst to inspire and empower them to continue their journeys of leading successful businesses. Collaborating with entities such as Tradepoint Atlantic, government authorities, and other partners, participants will be equipped to identify, evaluate, and seize opportunities for business growth, drawing from the knowledge acquired and practiced during previous workshops. During the event, participants will have the opportunity to engage with general contractors, tenants, and government partners involved in on-site work. This event marks the culmination of their efforts and signifies the beginning of further entrepreneurial endeavors.
Support Services
The most important takeaway from the Empowerment Academy is not only the opportunities made available to participants but also the relationships they will build with trainers and other businesses in the Academy cohort. Those relationships are critical to continue developing. We will allocate resources and ensure that the training team reaches out to offer follow-up appointments for up to four weeks after the program.
